Clean, oil, and store hand tools

A wire brush, a wipe of oil, and sharp bypass pruners make winter pruning pleasant. Drain hoses and irrigation. Hang tools; don't leave them in the wet wheelbarrow.

Steps

  1. Scrape soil. Wash. Dry.
  2. Oil wooden handles with boiled linseed. Wipe metal with light oil.
  3. Sharpen pruners and loppers. Replace springs that have given up.
  4. Drain and coil hoses. Blow out drip lines if you get hard freezes.

Tips

  • A bucket of oily sand is an old trick for wiping spades after each use.
