Divide crowded perennials
Fall (or early spring in cold climates) is the humane time. If the center of the clump is dead and the ring is falling open, you are late — which is still fine. Replant into amended soil and water well.
Steps
- Cut foliage back by half so you can see what you are doing.
- Lift with a spading fork. Split with a knife or two forks back to back.
- Replant divisions at the original depth. Compost in the hole. Water.
Tips
- Peonies resent moving. If you must, take a piece with three to five eyes and plant shallow.
