Cut back or leave standing

Ornamental grasses and coneflower seedheads are winter structure. Hostas turn to slime and can go as soon as they collapse. In spring, cut remaining stems before new growth is tangled in last year's straw.

Steps

  1. In fall, remove diseased foliage (bee balm mildew, peony botrytis) — do not compost it.
  2. Leave hollow stems and seedheads if you can stand the look.
  3. In March, cut remaining clumps before the new shoots are 2 inches tall.

Tips

  • A single late-winter pass is easier than fussing all November.
