Top-dress with compost

Compost is the closest thing to a universal product in this catalog. Screened, finished, earthy-smelling. Not raw manure against stems, not sour anaerobic muck.

Steps

  1. After aeration, broadcast a thin layer and drag it into the holes.
  2. In beds, a 1-inch layer in spring or fall is plenty.
  3. Keep compost off the crowns of perennials and the bark of trees.

Tips

  • If it smells like ammonia, it is not finished. Let it sit.
